What is a Cosmelan® DePigmentation Peel?

The Cosmelan® treatment by Mesoestetic®, is the world’s leading professional pigmentation removal method. The treatment is suitable for all forms of hyperpigmentation from melasma, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, solar lentigo or ephelides (freckles). Unlike other skin peels, the Cosmelan® treatment can be used on all skin phototype’s, including any with dark or Asian skin tones.

Hyperpigmentation concerns are a growing global issue; they affect more than 90% of adults over the age of 50. Regardless of skin colour, they are a significant issue because of their unattractive appearance and negative psychological and emotional impact, affecting quality of life.

Skin hyperpigmentation is caused by abnormal production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour, and is a consequence of uncontrolled, localised overproduction of melanin by the melanocytes, causing irregular skin coloration and dark spots

Cosmelan® DePigmentation Peel at a glance

Cosmelan® DePigmentation Peel work?

Step 1 - In Clinic Pre-Peel

2 weeks prior

Mesopeel Melanostop (Azelaic acid, Resorcinol & Phytic acid). A combined peel to prepare your skin for the Cosmlean treatment.

Azelaic acid 20%

This has an antibacterial effect and normalizes follicular keratinization. It boosts melanogenesis inhibition by targeting hyperactive melanocytes (antiproliferative effect). It gradually lightens and reduces the extent of hyperpigmentation.

Resorcinol 10%

Phenol derivative with keratolytic and regenerating properties. It targets melanin hyperpigmentation and has a whitening effect.

Phytic acid 6%

Strong copper and iron chelator that boosts tyrosinase enzyme inhibition and has a depigmenting action.

Step 2 - Intense Depigmentation

8 to 12 hours

Following a deep cleansing with the oil-removing solution, Cosmelan® 1 will be applied to your face. After the recommended application time, the client should remove the product at home, completing the first phase.

Removal of the mask at home: rinse carefully with plenty of lukewarm water, multiple times if necessary, avoiding direct contact with the eyes. In case of erythema, tightness or a sensation of dryness, we recommend applying a layer of Hydra-vital Factor K, allowing it to act for 10-15 minutes.

Step 3 - Continuous Depigmentation

Month 1

48 hours after removing the Cosmelan® 1 mask, it is necessary to continue with the daily depigmentation routine to supplement the corrective action of the method and to regulate overproduction of melanin inside the melanocyte.

Instructions for use: apply a pea sized amount of Cosmelan® 2 three times a day (morning, midday and night), followed by Melan Recovery and Melan SPF 130+ Pigment Control after daytime applications.

In the case of extreme sensitivity during this phase, consider spacing out the applications of Cosmelan® 2, without abandoning the treatment altogether. We will require you to watch our in clinic video to demonstrate application of products during consultation, and answer any questions you may have with the protocol.

Step 4 - Control of Hyperpigmentation

Months 2 & 3

At this point, it is important to treat the root cause of the blemish by regulating overproduction of melanin through constant regulation of the melanocyte. This controls both intra- and intercellular melanin production and prevents re-pigmentation.

Instructions for use: apply Cosmelan® 2 morning and night, followed by Melan Recovery, and Melan SPF 130+ Pigment Control during the day. In case of sun exposure, reapply UV protection at midday.

The skin should start to look ‘normal’ at this stage and the hyperpigmentation should be vastly reduced.

Step 5 -Controlling Reappearance

Month 4 to 7

The tendency to develop dark spots represents an ongoing risk. During the control phase, the treatment prevents the reappearance of the treated spots and the formation of new ones, for a longer-lasting result.

Instructions for use: apply Cosmelan® 2 at night, followed by Melan Recovery. During the day, apply Melan SPF 130+ Pigment Control and reapply in cases of direct sun exposure.

The treatment is now complete. We strongly recommend continuous use of sun protection as a permanent cosmetic treatment.

Chemical Peels FAQ’s

Does it hurt?
You may experience a slight tingly and warm sensation.

How quickly can I see results?

Results can be seen in as little as two weeks and can continue to improve - the optimal results can be seen 1 to 2 months after the treatment. We recommend maintenance using Mesoestetic® Melan 130+ SPF Sun Protection.

What side effects can I expect after this treatment?

Peeling, some redness and irritation can be expected initially. This may last until the application of Cosmelan® 2 is reduced in the second month. Mesoestetic® Fast Skin Repair is recommended to be applied to the skin to reduce the peeling and irritation significantly. This is provided in your homecare kit.

The skin can become dry when reaching the second stage of the peel when you start to introduce Cosmelan® 2 - this is completely normal. Mesoestetic® Hydra Vital Factor K, contained within the post peel pack, also helps with post treatment dryness and peeling.

What products should I avoid after the Cosmelan® treatment?

Any products containing Vitamin C or Retinols should be avoided throughout the treatment. During your consultation, we would advise consulting your practitioner about any routine products you use as part of your daily regime - we can go through these and advise about what to avoid before, during and after your Cosmelan® treatment.
