ABOUT STRETCH MARKS
Stretch marks are a common concern for many men and women of all ages and skin types. Stretch marks are characterised by ‘tiger stripes’ across the surface of the skin. Usually, they are red when they first appear and fade to white over time. They are most common across the tummy, hips, breasts and thighs and are caused by rapid growth and stretching of the skin.
You may have started to see them appear in your teens, after a big growth spurt, as a result of weight gain, or during pregnancy. Men can also experience stretch marks following muscle growth in the biceps or chest.
If the skin is forced to grow too quickly, fibers underneath the surface can tear, allowing your blood vessels to be seen through the upper layers of your skin. Over time, these blood vessels contract and become less red, but the tear itself leaves a scar-like white line underneath your skin.
